I recently applied and went through the processes of Written/Oral/Background/Polygraph tests with the LA County Sheriffs Dept. I passed all the tests, or I thought, and was only awaiting my date to take my psychological exam and medical exam before entering the academy. I was sent a letter claiming that I would not be hired based on: Driving under the influence. This was something that I had only admitted to doing ever in my life during one of the oral interviews, it was noted as a minor concern and never brought up again. I have never been convicted of a DUI or been pulled over/questioned or anything regaurding anything about one. Only that I had admitted to doing so.....I was wondering what my chances are of getting hired with another dept right now if I chose to start re-applying as I know they will have access to my LASD file.
What are my chances of getting hired at another police department after not hired b/c of drinking/driving?
Little chance because of the record but hope for the best.
Reply:Keep applying.
Most agencies are concerned primarily with felony convictions, not misdemeanors.
Here's where you screwed up. You disclosed your DUI during one of the oral interviews, right? So, that means you did not disclose it on your written application, right? Duh. The first thing ANY angency expects is complete honesty from the outset. Disclose EVERYTHING honestly and truthfully from the beginning of the application process. Many agencies will forgive isolated misdemeanors and drug use, but no agency will tolerate misinformation, lies, half-truths, or less-than-complete disclosures from its applicants or personnel.
Reply:I hate to said this. Forget about being a cop in any state.
